Noise #137: Godzilla and AI's Electric Hunger
AI calculations require massive amounts of power. American utilities can't keep up.
When I first read about America’s power grid staggering under heavy demand from AI firms, I started humming Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla”:
History shows again and again
how nature points out the folly of man
I love every epic, psychedelic nanosecond of that song. I also love how its lyrics reiterate a mega-theme from the Godzilla movies themselves—that we as humans are terrible at guessing how our inventions will impact the world. Which brings us right back to AI.
Artificial intelligence, at the level we’re seeing it, remains bleeding-edge new and undefinably disruptive.
Electricity shortages are just one early side effect.
What will AI’s longterm echoes be—and will history show, yet again, our folly?
Godzilla only knows.
I hope you enjoy Noise #137, my brief musical tribute to iconic monsters, massive innovations, and the unknown impacts of our choices.
Wishing you peace,
Michael
